The Mesa Model Yacht Club’s annual Victoria club Championship regatta was held on Dobson Ranch Lake on Saturday, January 26, 2019.
The regatta began right on time at 10am with NNW winds of 4-7
mph, which proved to be “Mostly” steady throughout the cool morning.
After the first three races, Jerry Robertson was clearly out in front, picking up three straight bullets, all by wide margins. It was looking like he might be unbeatable for the day. Though things can change.
Once the next three races were tallied up, Bob Spraker, Ray Dagenais, and Rob Shaw each tallied a number 1 finish, tightening the field by the time we broke for lunch after six races.
During the next 6 races, Bob Spraker and Ray Dagenais started to build a small cushion over their closest challengers, each scoring 2 bullets. Reviewing the full race sheet, 9 of 10 skippers each had at least a 4th or better finish in at least one of the 12 races.
Graham Johnson was steady all day and just nosed out Jerry Robertson, for 3rd place; with four 2nd’s after lunch. Bob Spraker and Ray Dagenais battled in the last 3 races with Bob squeaking out the 1st place honors, by a mere 2.5 points.
The racing was tight with many very close finishes. The weather was glorious, at 74 degrees and sunny skies, as Arizona is famous for this time of year.
