Regatta Results 36/600 Arizona State Championship 2018

By Rob Shaw 36/600 Race Director

The Mesa Model Yacht Club’s annual 36/600 Arizona state championship was held Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Dobson pond. Racing started under foggy conditions with winds ranging between 2 and 5 miles an hour. We sailed six long courses and six short courses. The sun came out by lunchtime and the winds died to 0 to 3 mph. This made for challenging racing with constant tuning.

Bob Spracker competing in his first 36/600 regatta took top honors sailing one of Dennis Deprois’ Millenniums with 10 1st place finishes. He would have taken all the races if it hadn’t been for an early start and a DNF due to one of his shrouds coming loose leaving his mast with the sails floating in the water. Sailing stopped as the rescue boat retrieved his boat and the shroud was reconnected.

The fight for second place was competitive between Rob Shaw sailing one of Bob Stearns’ Venoms and Dirk Brewer sailing his Millennium. It came down to the last race to determine that Rob edged out Dirk by only 3 points. Phil Meyrick beat Kirk Welker by 1 point to take 4th place.

The day of sailing was fun with only a few protests. I want to thank everyone for assisting in the set up of the course and cleaning up afterwards.
